I bought a gas fire about 3 years ago, so its out of warranty. The problem is that it isn't working & having contacted the manufacturer they say that the company that made the part I need no longer exist. The only way to resolve the problem is to buy the complete workings for the fire which has also had a few modifications since I bought mine & the cost of the parts will be almost £200 plus I have then to get a Corgi gas engineer to fit it at probably the best part of another £100. Its not a simple case of chucking the whole thing out and buying a complete new fire as its one of those modern built in the wall framed stainless steel jobs set about a metre high in a purpose made appature....... surely manufacturers have a duty to supply spare parts for their products for a number of years ......or dont they???

If they are out of business then they are out of business, nothing you can do about that.

I'm having a hard time with your terms. Are you talking about a gas fireplace logs? If so, then there are two thingss that go wrong more than others. One is an electric igniter and the other is the thermo couple, if you have a pilot light. both will need to be cleaned with emery cloth or sandpaper. Adjust the electrode on the igniter to about 3/16ths of an inch from the contact point. The thermocouple for the pilot should be directly in the flame. If you have a multimeter that reads milivolts you can hook it in parallel with the wires and adjust it until you get about 500 milivolts or 1/2 of a volt. This may help you.

Hello,

(ANS) This kind of story makes me furious with the kind of society we now live in. Here today gone tommorrow!! all that matters to companies is making a profit and if they go bust then thats just tough on ex customers.

**The problem isnt you!!, your request seems extremely understandable & completely reasonable. We now live in such a throw away, disposable culture that if things brake or develop a fault nobody wants to know, & thats even more true if the product is out of warrenty.

**I get the strong impression these days that nobody repairs or bothers to fix things anymore!! Why? because its NOT profitable to conduct repairs, so few makers keep spare parts.

**As you can see you may sadly find that its actually cheaper in the longer term to throw away the faulting fire & purchase a new gas fire.

**I agree totally that this shouldnt be how it is, but companies & capitolism dictates this utter wastefullness. And the governments & people wonder why we have climate change?? Its all so wastefull.

Get the Corgi guy in to have a look. There may be a safe cheap workaround. Usually firms have a 5 year parts policy and "technically" they have.
