They will win the East but lose in the playoffs. They are an older team and will need to make some major moves or rebuild during the next few years.

I feel that their making the playoffs is unevitable at this point. With a lineup like that all you need is mediocre pitching to make it to October. The playoffs however will rest solely on who the rotation consists of at that point. I am a Yankee fan however I greatly fear injuries to this primarily old staff. This may somehow benefit the Yankees if a guy like Hughes or Sanchez can come up and make a name for themselves at the MLB level. If the staff is healthy they should be fine... look for
Wang: 15 Wins
Petit: 14 Wins
Igawa:13 Wins
Mussina: 17
Pavano: 12
That's assuming everyone is healthy, and Pavano pitches at least at the level he did on Monday (errors, stolen bases made him look worse than he performed). Igawa should be a pleasant suprise.
And this bullpen is solid.
Also don't forget the Yankees desire to bulk up the rotation by possibly adding another arm beforethe All Star Break...
And I can promise you Cashman makes a large push for Clemens.
Optimistically the Yankees can only be beat by themselves.
The Yankees farm system is finally something to take into account...this means two things.
Homegrown prospects helping the Yankees win for years to come....
and Trade bait
Prediction?
Yankees finish: 98-64
Win the East....
playoffs depend on how different this team looks come post season, for better or worse.

It's really hard for the Yankees to miss the postseason. If they stink, and two of the Central teams really shine, it's possible, but only just. The real question is, of course, how they'll do in the postseason - is this a team built for the regular season, like that of the past few years, or one that can succeed in the postseason as well? I think the answers to that question will become evident as the season progresses. At the moment I would predict them getting to the ALCS, and running into the Angels at that point. The Angels are going to be incredibly difficult to beat in a seven-game series. Of course, never count that Yankee aura and mystique out!

They win the division and the Red Sox cry foul because George will get out his checkbook and FINALLY buy the starting pitcher (or two) that will put them over the top down the stretch. If that happens... the jig is up!!! IMHO
