There really isn't one, anymore, that doesn't give you spyware or virus problems...that's why they're still free, because they make their money some other way. Even Morpheus ends up littering your computer with problems.

try bear share...but I've been with limewire for about 10 years now and i have only gotten one virus....i would suggest getting better spyware....but I'm also a dj and i hope i don't get sued for "stealing" music but I'm a member of a couple record pools...the best sooo far is Cicana.com...its not free...a simple 10 dollars a month...check it out!!!

If you want to stay LEGAL, you can try gomusic.ru. Its is Russian site, but in English. Each song is only 10-15 cents, so its a lot cheaper than most sources, like iTunes. Its competely legal, and doesn't give you viruses. I know this because my cousin works in a computer store, and this is what he recomended. I would give it a try; I use it and its great. Good luck!

I don't know about downloading, but I just go to the local library and check out the cds i want and then go home and make copies of them.
You can actually get ALOT of current and brand new cds from the library. In alot of genres, you might be surprised to find.

it's the stuff you download, not the site that gives you the problems. limewire is probably the best but try www.shareaza.com

Ares is really good it didnt give me any viruses!
But google search it and make sure u find the official site
cuz others try to make u pay for it to download it

Like you say,free sites are dodgy.Try this...http://www.mp3sale.ru/..Its not free but its safe and Very cheap.Been using it for months and the payment lasts for ever.
