Because Guillermo Canas has a style of play that matches up very well against Roger Federer. Roger can play great defense and great offense, but he's not used to players who play even better defense than him (Basically ONLY Canas and Nadal) and so tries to make up for this by playing incredibly offensive tennis, which is not really his style. This is why this type of player can beat Federer. They neutralize his power and shotmaking and make him try to hit harder than he really should be. Thus Roger is giving away points on unforced errors.

Canas really worked on his tennis while he was banned so he's pretty good right now and may have caught Federer having a bad game the first time. The second time, Federer was probably thinking too much about the first loss and did not concentrate on his game instead. It could be anything. Federer has beaten Djokovic every time they met and yet Djokovic beat Canas in straight sets....maybe this year isn't Fed's year....everyone can have an off game....even the best of them. Nadal holds a 7-3 (or is it 6-3) records against Federer....right now Canas and Nadal are dialed in to Federer's game and Roger can't seem to answer it. Clay season begins which heavily favors Canas' game...and definitely the king of clay - Nadal. In other surfaces where the ball is fast, Nadal's always in danger....not on clay. Like Roddick, he can serve 145mph to Nadal but when that serve hits the dirt, it's only like he just serve 125mph...maybe a little more but it would not feel like 145mph.

Well, Canas has the type of game that rushes federer. He has the speed of Nadal and the power of blake or philippoussiss. Fed can wether the storm and win against these types of guys if his opponents starts to get tired, but Canas is so fit and strong, at 6'1 around 200 Lbs, that it doesn't happen.

Roger, has little weaknesses except his ego. He truly believes he is by the far the best and maybe he is. If you notice he preforms like a Swiss watch. I have only seen him play bad once, last yr against Andy Murray. The only way to beat him is to stay close in the match, but you must have also taken a set or two, because his weakness comes in the last set. when his ego can't take the fact someone can possibly beat him. Canas has stayed close both times winning when Roger's ego had doubt for moment, in this modern game it is now instances that matter, everything is so fast. Canas beat him the first time in two sets 1st being a tie-breaker and continue his get everything back in the 2nd. In Florida, Canas, held close losing one set and Roger was even up a break in the 3rd. Roger started over hitting and Canas again hit back. In the end Roger's ego was deflated, he could not believe he was up a break in the 3rd and this guy came back. But Roger also had in his mind the fact Canas beat him two weeks earlier. Just about every loss Roger has had, and they are few, follow this scenario. Canas has shown hard work and steady play bring doubt to this opponent. There maybe another factor Canas was hungier the first time and beat Roger, And Roger will always have doubt when playing Canas. Match ups play like that also.

kowtow21 has the correct answer and if others don't think so then you do not know tennis. this is the reason why though he may lose to nadal and canas, the score is close because it is their ball retrieving activities that frustrate roger f. this is also the reason why, thus far, he has not won the french - he's an offensive player who does not allow his opponents to prolong the rallies. on the other hand, their ball retrieval activities are what injure or exhaust nadal and canas so quickly in a season

One of the commentators on ESPN also said that Canas' serve played a role. When they showed the graphic of where Canas kept placing his serves it made it pretty hard for Roger to get to them.

kowtow21 is correct. Federer doesn't like playing against guys that run down his shots, especially seemingly impossible shots that he usually whips out. It kinda hits his confidence and then he starts overpowering the ball so he can plow his opponents, but this will result in unforced errors.
