The name Christopher means "Christ bearer" and on the medal, in icons, and in religious art he is shown as an elderly bearded man who is carrying Jesus across a stream or river. He, therefore, became the patron saint of travelers and when people went on a journey is was traditional for them to carry some sort of small, light-weight token to remind them of their journey and of, ultimately, the potential to make every journey a religious journey.

Sort of ironically, St. Christopher was 'down-graded' as a saint by Pope John Paul II. He was considered to be used only for local or special veneration and not necessarily for the universal church. The reason for this is that there is very little if any historical evidence to suggest that St. Christopher ever existed, at all, anywhere. He is more the incarnation of the belief that Christ should be carried in the heart of every Christian.
