OK, I'm not a wacko leftist like the other answers. The answer is quite simple, Property rights. The best managed forests are those managed by logging companies. The worst managed forests are government forests run by logging companies. You treat property better when you own it.
Also lower property taxes on forest land or offer easements. If I owned forest land and had the choice of letting the government confiscate it for not paying taxes or cutting down the trees to pay for it, I would probably cut the trees. Or sell my property to a developer or someone else who will cut the trees so I get something.

Arm Forest Rangers with AK 47's, Most of these reponses don't seem to realize that most logging is done illegaly, Like in Eastern Russia and Indonesia, they already have laws but no police to enforce the vast forests. So I stand by my decision to ARM RANGERS WITH AK 47's

recycle as much wood and paper products as you can,
PLANT TREES, as many as you can and get everybody you know to do the same. Try three for everyone you see removed.
Lobby your local council to plant trees as memorials instead of stone ones.
Adopt a tree in your local park and take care of it. A project for your school ?

Land preservation of forested areas (like, setting up national parks or reserves)
Buying sustainable-growth products (like bamboo flooring rather than old-growth flooring)
Recycling old building materials (like, salvaging wood from old structures and reselling it)
Punishing manufacturers, energy plants, farmers, etc. who create environmental stress that harms forests (most currently get a slap on the wrist in the form of very light fines.)
