I have to go with the Dyson. Expensive but worth the money. You might be able to find an older model on Ebay for your budget.
Another place to look is Consumer Reports. If you cant get a copy, try the library. A lot of libraries have an online subscritpion. CR should have a recent test on vacuums they have compared. Good housekeeping is another good resource.

Eureka, The Boss, SmartVac is the #1 in consumer reports for its price range. I have it and it's great on carpets and hardwood. if you flip the switch the brush stops so that you don't send the crumbs flying everywhere. It's definitely cheaper than any of those mentioned. It is heavy to push b/c it has great suction, but I'm small, so it may not bother you. It is a bag vacuum, so it's not as dusty as the canister vacuums. I've had those bagless type and I think they are nasty.

Either a Dyson or a Oreck. The Oreck is light weight and when you buy one you get a vacuum for your car and a canister vacuum thrown in for free and they give you free bags for both vacuums. The Dyson is good because it's easier to empty for some people. I love my 8 lb. Oreck I have terrible back problems and I can vacuum now without ending up in bed. Hope this helps you.

I know this guy who runs a house cleaning service and he swears by the Oreck. He says to get the commercial version and you'll get a lot of power and durability for the money.
I think they're less than $300.
I think the Kirby is overrated and way too expensive. The hoover's are pretty good, but I was told to always get one with a bag. The bagless are too messy, I guess.

DYSON, okay they are a bit expensive but they are worth every penny, good for people with allergies, great for sucking up the pet hair if you have pets, save money on hoover bags , and another great thing is the filter, easy to remove ,east to clean , what more can you ask for? DYSON

I like Panasonic, they last forever, they're reasonably priced and have a bypass motor, so if you suck up pennies, etc. it will NOT destroy the motor.
Look online for the best prices.
