Is this horse a gift or is your grand daughter picking him out with you? Please don't give the horse as a gift, your grand daughter needs to be able to test ride the horse and meet the horse before you decide on one. Maybe instead, have the gift still be the horse, but you and her will look for it together, so you two can spend time, and she gets her horse. You want to make sure she is able to care for it properly, and will still want it in a few years. I know when I was a teen, interests can change from horses to boys. (It didn't happen to me, but to my friends).

To get a green horse, she needs to be a very experienced rider who will be able to devote the time and energy needed to work with a green horse. You may be better off with a 10-20 year old horse that is fully trained.

If she is experienced. a good place to get a horse is a local humane society or horse rescue. There are often some great horses who just need a good home where they will be loved.

If she isn't experienced or even if she is, you may want to try local tack and feed stores, they often have a wall of horses for sale, and often there are less expensive horses that would be great. Also, reputable stables where the horses are well cared for is another option, they may know of horses for sale that suit your needs. Even the regular newspaper has classifieds, I know in my area there have often been some great horses for real cheap or free!

Good luck in your search! You have a lucky grand daughter!

Rather than go the "greenbroke and cheap" route, how about looking for "aged and cheap"?

If you value your granddaughter's life and limb, get her a horse between 10 and 15 years old, healthy, sound, and well trained. Retired show horses can be a great bargain.

Greenbroke horses (typically young) are too prone to unpredictable behavior and therefore pose a great risk to a young and probably less experienced rider. With an aged horse you are more sure of what you are getting.

You're best bet is to check sites like the ones listed below:

http://www.equine.com
http://www.dreamhorse.com
http://www.horsetopia.com
http://www.horseville.com

Also, just a note, green horses should be for experienced riders and trainers only. If your granddaughter's only been riding for a few years, I highly recommend you find something with more miles. If she's very experienced, though, you may be interested in finding a horse from off the track. You can usually pick them up within the price range you listed, and they make great projects if you have the experience, patience, and finances. Check out the CANTER project at http://www.canterusa.org/ ).

Is your grandaughter very experienced with horses? If you get a green broke young horse she had better be. If not, why not look into a more mature horse, owned by people who can attest to it's manner, ect. My daughter had a wonderful horse, probably around 10 yrs old, who gave her years of faithful service, and the horse only cost around 500.

at that age I easily have a splash hassle seeing attempting to interrupt a horse, yet what maximum animals respond to is friendliness, while my filly grow to be born there wasn't something i did no longer do along with her. daily i grow to be there finding out on up ft rubbing grooming, the whole 9 yards of what I do with any horse, all the floor artwork as she grow to be becoming i grow to be teacing as she grew. flow over to the frenzy, provide to the strain, through the time she grow to be sixteen months previous there grow to be toddlers sitting on her back and driving without ever being in a around pen or workek different than in simple terms being a chum. she gave to the bit, allowed it to be put in her mouth etc, each and every element which you will likely do is what shpoiuld be do to help instruct a horse to do what you ask, she now rides barrels poles, path , she would be waiting to even decrease a cow, shes astonishing ,

The best place to search for one that is local to your area is to go to Dreamhorse.com and do a local search....you can even put in how much you want to spend!
