I came from a poor family. I joined the Navy, I got out, used my military benefits and got 3 degrees while working full time. Married a Lawyer and now live well. I could have chosen to remain poor but I refused to. It was because of the governments generosity that I have so much today. It is something anyone can do.

You are my hero! I can't tell you how angry it makes me when all these poor people go wandering around whining that they need help from the government when in many cases they're perfectly capable of getting it for themselves. Most of the time, they're just lazy and don't want to do any work; they figure life's just going to fall out of the sky on a silver platter, and everything will be happy. (Given, many politicians are only too happy to cater to that illusion, but I digress.) There are some out there who truly can't do the work for themselves, but most of the people at the welfare office are entirely capable.

Keep up the good work -- you're an inspiration to everyone.

There will always be poor people. If every poor person made it then who clean the toilets at our schools. It's a sad reality, but our society banks on a certain percentage of us to take the crap work, somebody has to do it. In a capitalist society, we depend on success just as much as we depend on underachieving and failures. It has a balancing effect that benefits one group and tends to make the other side bitter. With that said, I think the government should take a bigger role in helping the under privileged. Not all poor people are lazy. Nobody can help where their born or who their born to. We're all human. If you're reading this, that you most likely means won the lottery as a human. Most people on this earth don't know what a key board is. I'm not for spoiling these people, but definitely offering them the basic necessities to survive. Fair enough?

Yes, the poor people of the United States should fight ALL of OUR WARS. Great point! It's not like the elitist children are lining up to go first ... because they are usually in Higher Education facilities 'working' on their degrees and pedigrees. How very thoughtful of Uncle Sam -- was he recruiting at your school? Because that's usually the way it's done in poor neighborhoods. Middle income neighborhoods frequently protest that kind of recruiting tatic.

Most poor people work ... LOW PAYING JOBS THAT ARE NECESSARY FOR OUR SOCIETY... that the elitist and most of middle class are NOT willing to work. AND most people on welfare ARE WHITE WOMAN with CHILDREN who DO NOT LIVE IN INNER-CITIES and are NOT generational. Did that little statistic slip the notice of you and some of your above supporters?

AND what of the education rating of the schools in most poor neighborhoods ... what kind of a job can you get with that or how is that going to prepare one for college? Guess what happens when you get government loans to go to school and can't keep the grades up? You're saddled with more debt which wrecks your credit and have to pay it back with the same LOW paying job. And the stress of living in poor areas ... Higher crime rates in poor areas are not caused by ALL the poor-- they ONLY AFFECT them because they LIVE IN THEM, not being able to afford to move to a different neighborhood.

AND as for "It is something anyone can do" -- that's just not true. MOST people in the United States are NOT capable of working fulltime, earning 3 degrees, having a family and military service PLUS statistically most people won't marry a Dr/Lawyer/Indian Chief. Why should poor people be held to a standard that the majority of USA citizens won't even reach???

What you have done is exemplary! You should be proud! But how you've chosen to behave once you have "ARRIVED" is NOT. Your story could be inspirational. Instead you use it to speak in a condescendingly of the place you came from ... you just cross the line from being part of the solution, to being part of the problem.

Reconsider your stance. A slap to the face of a poor person doesn't make them stronger. And not being made stronger by a kick when you're low, doesn't make you a lesser person. Search your soul. Remember your roots.

You don't have to give back to your old community. It's not required of the poor anymore than it's required of anyone else. But you don't have to hurt the poor in their plight with your condescending ideology. Was this your intent with this question? Because it certainly presented that way.

MATH and GENETICS

If everyone could pull themselves up by the bootstraps and make something of themselves that would require two things,

1. The genetic makeup to be intelligent enough to do well in school and pursue a path after school that would lead to opportunity.

2. An unlimited supply of money in this country which is where MATH comes in.

If everyone did as well for themselves as you did then we would all have good jobs and make good money, we would all have a Mercedes, a Mac Mansion and Prada shoes.

THEN EVERYTHING WOULD FALL APART. There has to be a class system (always has been and always will be). Think of how many industries depend on the poor from fast food to Wal Mart all dependent on the poor to work for them and to then by their goods. A perfect symbiosis don't you think.

Maybe you should have asked "how can I help better the lives of the poor and elevate them as I elevated myself?"

Everyone cant be well off but those of us who can should help those who are not.

Well good for you. You took advantage of the oportuinties this great country offered. Some are lazy and with the help of the liberals who offer free stuff for no work can't figure out why they are not happy. Today most don't just blame the government they blame the president for everything wrong and even made up things that might be wrong. lol I too took advantage of education and although not rich I am comfortable and happy with what I do.

people like to blame others rather then realize that they are the solution to their problems. Everyday i walk to work and I see so many hands out asking for money. Why would I walk to work though rain and snow trying to save money on parking and then just give away my money? I saw an ad on tv the other day about how someone ALMOST gave the homeless guy some money or ALMOST gave the homeless food.... how about the fact that the bum probably wasted his money on drugs, alcohol, gambling... or where ever else he blew his opportunity to be a contributing member to society. I am sick of people trying to make me feel bad for not giving more than I do. I work hard for my money, why shouldnt everyone else? i'm sorry the bum has a hard life, but i would have a hard life too if i all i did was wander the streets aimlessly, doing drugs, drinking, gambling, etc.

Why do the rick always side the government? Why don't they share their wealth with the poor?

Why the wealth opportunity alway given to those who are rich with the governments and not the poor?

Why do the government easily pick a scapegoat from the poor but not the rich when things go wrongly?

Why do government alway steal the livelihood of the poor's creation and invention?

Why do government alway prevent the poor being getting richer?

Why do government need to feed many expensive useless doggies to keep guard on us when we just need a day survival for meal to fill up our tummy?

Why do government pay is much higher than poors' wages?

Why do government alway full of shits on taxes and rises of living cost?

The higher pay and the higher position u got, u have no mood to work, all u cares are how to protect your ******* rich n powerful rice bowl that's all.

Finally why do government show their **** face only when election comes and not ordinary days to meet us the poor?

Thats a generalization, not all poor people blame the government. There are plenty of poor people who realize that it was something they did to get them where they are; however the government is to blame for much of the poverty in the United States. With the lack of health care, education, and affordable resources it becomes difficult to support a family of six. More power to you for turning your life around but I wouldnt go so far as to say the government did anything to help you in that except put a roof over your head. YOU accomplished all of those things...not the government.

Because they have been raised in an entitlement society.

Life is a Choice. Poor People Choose to be poor!

In everything they do and fail to do in their day to day life they choose their life.

The difference between a being a millionaire and being broke at retirement is less than the cost of a cell phone plan every month. Invest or spend it is your choice.

Look at all you've done. To them, it's so much easier to sit back, collect welfare and blame the government for everything. I too went in the Marines and college. Lazy stays lazy unless someone kicks them in the butt and forces them to work.
