I have been job searching for over a year now and still have not found the job that really fits my skills. I send out several resumes per month and have yet to hear from anyone.

The same thing happened to me while I was job searching. You're in the USA, right?

Many times an employer is required to attempt to find an American worker before being allowed to hire a non-American. Therefore, they advertise an opening even though they have no intention of hiring anyone who applies for it. What they really want is to hire a foreign worker, for example a friend of people in the country who wants to work over here. The hiring of foreigners for work that is heavily funded by our government is very common, but I have been surprised at how disrepectfully some of them behave toward one or more Americans while on the clock.

Another reason is probably that the companies figure that it's always nice to have a bunch of resumes on hand if ever they need an employee. They figure it's not much of an expense for them just to ignore the resumes till a position opens.

Are you sending a cover letter? Sometimes they will be more inclined to see that someone is interested in them in particular if there is a cover letter. It also presents a reason to be with the company in particular.

Beef up your resume. Perhaps talk to some friends who are working and get help. Try to fill in unemployed time with something, like start educating yourself in a field at home after making a little office space for yourself. And put down that you have been doing it for as long as you have been unemployed because I'm sure you have done something that you could argue had something to do with preparation to do it.

If I knew your particulars I might know more about what to say. Talk to friends and good luck!

Addendum: Cheryl is right that monster.com helps get an interview. However, be aware that many general recruiters will be contacting you to get you a job and take their cut from the company. I prefer dealing with a company's own recruiters. If it weren't for monster.com it would be much easier to get a job by contacting companies directly. Many companies use monster.com and other online sites to find employees.

Well, the obvious reason would be that they have hired someone else.....

Now would be a good time to speak to one of those who you once interviewed with to ask a few tough questions.

"Am I qualified for this type of job?"
"Is there something about my personal appearance or the way I dress or speak which I can change to make myself a better candidate?"
"What did you find in the person you DID hire which you did NOT find in me?"

If you are sending out resumes and NOT getting INTERVIEWS, then you have a bigger problem. You need to have someone take a look at your resume and your prospective career and make some definitive changes.

You need to send out several resumes per day, probably. I applied to well over one hundred jobs before I got my current job.

You're not fitting what they're looking for.

Resumes are used to turn in at the time of the interview not to get the interview. You need to network meet people then bring a resume with you.

Maybe your skills and experience don't fit what they're looking for? Have you tried posting your resume on HotJobs or Monster?
