The outside is softer but you MUST install the paper so that it comes from UNDER so when it is folded... oh my goodness. I can't believe I'm telling you this.

if u want to be sure for urself buy the one with patterns...u will notice the outside is smoother...its the same for the plain ones or even hand towels.
