Considering who is running the US government, MUCH, MUCH less involvement. George W Bush would screw up a one car parade.

There were many changes in the economy during that period. The most important were:
- growth of heavy industry, especially steel
- growth of transportation networks, especially railroads
- growth of communications networks (telephone)
It was an era of tremendous technological change, including the automobile and airplanes.

The Depression was obviously the driving factor for FDR. Millions of people were unemployed and desperate and FDR had to find something to help them.
- Works Progress Adminstration, immediate in 1930s, helped create jobs for people
- Securities and Exchange Commission oversaw markets.
- FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance), protects against bank failures

Federal Reserve Bank (technically not run by the government, but still a federal agency) was a little earlier. It has controlled the money supply for much of the last century.

Why do people forget that the US economy is booming compared with nearly every time in US history? I think the US has a good involvment level right now, any more is bordering on socialism and setting the stage for an eventual command economy.

The US went for a strong nation to an industrial powerhouse in the late 19th century. By the end of that time it had the base needed to be a legitamate player on the world stage.

The government instituted work place regulations.

You can't remove the government entirely from the economy as long as they print the currency, make the laws and pass the taxes so neccesary to the government's politicians and bureaucrats survival and oppulent lifestyle.
