If you are a beginner, I would recommend ChessMaster 10.

It has "computer personalities" of different strengths, so you can always set the computer to play at the level that is suitable for you. It also has an "academy" with very good lectures on chess playing tactics, strategies, quizzes and diagnostic tests. There is also a database of some of the great games, some of them annotated.

If you are not an absolute beginner, Fritz might be a better bet, with its "friend mode" and "sparring mode".

Just about all PC chess games have a learner mode, or at least a "help" button that will suggest moves. If you can get your hands on any version of Battle chess or National Lampoon's "Chess Maniacs 5 Million and 1" buy both of them! Both of these games are so much fun with so many variations that you want to keep playing!
