the best team before Aeris dies, is Cloud, Aeris and Vincent, you get the close range fighter who can do massive damage, the healer that can save your characters from a brutal death and the uncontrollable demon, which can be very effective if you use his forms agains the right monster. After Aeris dies, the best team is Cloud, Nanaki(Red XIII) and Yuffie, you get the massive damage dealer, a person that can speed up and strength your characters along with a character than can heal your characters for a bit of damage.

I was about to say have someone focused on healing, someone casting defensive spells and someone focusing mainly on wittling the monsters HP with attacks but nevermindddddddd 'cos I hate it when people say that..After all, what would happen when the healer falls..you would have to revive 'em and that would spoil your whole plan lol.
You must have a flexible set of characters, each equipped with healing spells, elemental spells, good attacks and defence etc. And a shared amount of summons! Which of course every character has, as the only thing that is customised is which character has which weapon, e.g. Tifa with her gloves & Vincent with his gun.
[Speaking of which, did you get Yuffie & Vincent?]
My favourite threesome to use is Vincent, Tifa & Cloud, mainly 'cos I love 'em! With the exception of Tifa, Aeris is the best female in my eyes..but.. -sniff-

Almost any character in FF7 can play as any role with the right equipment. You need to level your characters more or less evenly, since thre are several times you are stuck with a limited party. Most of the rest of the time, you can pick a party on looks just as much as waht they can do.
Do make sure that all of your characters can revive, and healing is also something nice to spread around.

That depends on what enemies you are fighting. Cloud, Tifa, and Red always seemed to work pretty well for me.

It doesn't necessarily matter, because (as you will find out) all of your characters need to be leveled-up almost equally.
Whatever you do, DO NOT neglect to level up any one particular character.
I don't want to spoil the game for you.
