Well first of all load up Internet Explorer. Now if you can see the menu bar(ie:'File,Edit,View...') then skip this step.
1)If you can't see the menu bar press 'ALT' on the left of the spacebar and this will show it
Now go to the last option on the menu bar 'HELP' and then choose the option 'About...'.
It will load up a new window displaying the information you need.

To see what version of Internet Explorer you're using, open Internet Explorer, go to the Help menu at the top of the screen, and click About Internet Explorer. There you will see the version.

If you're on a Windows machine, open Internet Explorer, select Help from the Menu Bar, and select About Internet Explorer. It's listed on the small window that pops up.

8.0. To know if you're using 8.0 or not, simple click "help" on the menu bar in the Internet Explore and the click "about", there you should see the version of the explore you're having. If you're using XP and you did not update the windows or explore, then probably you have the older version which is 6.0. Whereas, if you're using Windows Vista, most likely you will have 7.0.
