I don't know if this will help you or not. In the U.S. when we use the term "the Orient" we refer only to the Far East (China, Japan, Korea, Tibet, the lands of Southeast Asia. But when the British use the same term they mean all of Asia. I understand that "Asia" was originally a small country that was the first country that Europeans came to when they left Europe. The term "Asia" came to meet the entire continent. In the U.S. we refer to the Middle East or the Mid-East while the British refer to it as the Near East. India and Pakistan are often refered to as the "Subcontinent". I hope this has been a help to you.

I suppose that no one else than the Europeans had in former times the idea that something like an Asian continent exists. The only one else I could think of were the Mongols of 12th century. But I do not know much about their thoughts. And of course the Muslims found the notion of Asia in the ancient Greek texts they translated.
