I like AOL Active Virus Shield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
Full test chart is here:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82

Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb ram)

Active Virus Shield detects and removes spyware, also.

And it updates up to 15 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.

Good stuff, free for everyone from:

AVG Anti-Virus!!! Go to http://www.grisoft.com to download it. Downlaod the free version. It is great! My School uses this paid version on all of the computers on our school network. (about 100 + computers) The free version is just as good.

AVG for my money, but PC magazine swears by the latest Norton Suite. (I never cared for Norton, myself personally...) Go to the PC magazine website and see their ratings - it's free access, and they compare several anti-virus pieces of software.

Norton is bloatware junk. AVG Free provides great virus protection without slowing down your computer and hogging all your RAM. It's available at http://free.grisoft.com

I am a big fan of the new Norton 360 from Symantec. Much improved from their old products.
