Hi. The CD drive can be uninstalled by right clicking on 'My Computer' select Properties, then Hardware, the Device manager. Find the drive, right click, select uninstall. . Reboot and your PC will find and install the drive. If this doesn't work you may have bad media.

Perhaps I think the CD is empty. If it is not, the lead in and lead out data might be corrupted. Try not to stress your drive by inserting this again and again. Your CD Drive is not at all at fault. Only the CD is at fault. Try writing any data using your CD writing software. I think it will work. One more option is check it on your friends' systems. You will know whether your CD or CD Drive is at fault.

Is it happens to all type of Cd's? CD or DVD Rom is using an Optical Pickup (Laser Transmitting). A component in it call LD (Laser Diode). It's power of emitting laser beam will become lesser due to lots of 'reading' CD/DVD surface. It will not 'reading' at all if the LD 'dies'. (Cannot be repaired, unless you have the machine.) Sometime CD/DVD Rom cannot 'read' because of dirty LENS (part of Optical Pickup). You can clean it with appropriate CD Rom cleaner like 'Video CD Lens Cleaner'. Available in market. You also have to make sure your CD/DVD is clean from dust, finger marks, oil or else. If you still get the same result, I suggest you buy a new CD/DVD Rom.
