How do you clean a large (8x12), fine wool and silk oriental rug?

Without bringing it to a special shop...

Unfortunately, it doesn't have a tag, but I'm pretty sure it's wool.

If it is valuable, you run the risk of ruining it. If you refuse to take it to a pro, go ahead and use aerosol rug shampoo. Don't get upset if it curls or fades.

Used to work near a rug store that also did restoration work.
Surprised to see them cleaning old hand made oriental rugs by spreading them out in the driveway & hosing them down.
I had bought a rug there & asked "thats it" expecting a fancy answer.
Was told that the jute backed rugs were, by virtue of the way they are made are very strong & could take it.
Also pointed out that some of the rugs were well over a hundred years old.
They ( lebanese owners) said that since the rugs were coverings for dirt floors in tents as they were originally used, they got beaten often
They did admit to using woolite on occasion , but mainly just hosed them down without scrubbing when washing was necessary.
Do'nt know if there was silk in them though.

Wellll, I was going to say, call a carpet dealer and ask~lol~But if you want to do it yourself, I would try that Woolite Rug & Carpet cleaner that is out now. I haven't tried that, but I have tried the dry Resolve cleaner, and it's GOOD! You just brush it in-(The brush comes with it) and then vacuum it off/out. Just be sure and read all the warnings on either of them first, so you don't damage the rug:)

I would contact the company and find out if it needs special cleaning (Look on the tag)

get a professional carpet cleaner in, if they screw it up they have to pay for it, if you do that's your own bad luck
