Nit-picking a bit aren't you? Too bad there isn't a grammar checker on here, eh? I opt for the second choice, only because it sounds better when read aloud. I think either one is grammatically correct. Actually I dislike them both. Physical abuse is not plural, yet you're using "are common" to describe it. Maybe word it like this- Physical abuse, including beatings and rapes IS common. It sounds wrong but I believe it's grammatically correct. Next question!

Neither of those sentences is correct. The second one is closer, but you need a comma: "Physical abuse, including beatings and rape, are common."

Neither. I would write it as, "Physical abuse, including beatings and rape, is common." You have to take out the phrase "including beatings and rape" and see how it sounds. Which sounds better? "Physical abuse are common" or "Physical abuse is common"?

Neither

Physical abuse, including beatings and rapes, are common.

You made an ASIDE or AMPLIFICATION and you have to terminate it.

You start it with a comma, you terminate it with a comma.

The same way with the dash -- and the parenthesis

Physical abuse (inclduing beatings and rapes) are common.

Physical abuse -- including but not limited to beatings and rapes -- are common.

Neither, technically.
If you want to use plural examples, it should be 'physical abuses, including beatings and rapes, are common'
If you want to use singular, it should be "Physical abuse, including beating and rape, is common"
