so i just got a needle fish from petsmart and they labeled it as a green fish. How ever i have read that they eat fish!!!! so am i totally screwed now?

here is the best picture i could get. Right know i ahve green water from algae lol but other than the pictures it is kinda a goldish/greyish needlefish with red "lips" and a black stripe all the way through the middle from tail to mouth.

it is maybe like 4 or 5 inches long?

If you have smaller fish in the tank....YES. They will eat anything that is smaller than thier mouths. Also you have to have a larger tank for them (30+) if you have it in a smaller tank it will not do well. Another thing about their eating habbits: they have to have live food...so if you dont have smaller fish you are willing to sacrafice you will need to feed him fish. I suggest taking him back.

That depends on exactly which fish you got. There are several sold under that general name. Some are quite small (like halfbeaks) and won't be a problem for anything larger than a baby livebearer. Others can get over a foot and cause serious hassles for anything less than 6" long. If you can post a pic of your fish maybe we can ID it and get you more exact info.
