Fossils are generally found in rock with a hig degree of calcium, such as limestone and in most cases that is sedimentary rock. Usually the fossil was either an ocean dwelling creature where the ocean has now receded or it died in limestone mud and became covered before it could be eaten or destroyed

Limestone is common stone to find fossils in. If you go to a limestone driveway and check out some of the rocks, you could probably find several fossils of different plants and aquatic animals.

Fossils occur when life remains are buried in sediments and mineralize. They will be foound in sedimentary rocks (I'm counting volcanic ash as sedimentary). Metamorphic rock may have contained fossils, but is is very unlikey one could recognise them.
