I'm in the market for a computer. I listen to itunes, edit photos (I like taking photos), and the internet. Oh yeah, I'm a student too (college) so appropiate software. I've been to dell.com but they so many questions. I know I don't want the usual anti-virus that comes with computers. Norton and McAfee suck. I plan on buying a real anti-virus program. Other than that I have no clue. I'm not very keen on hp's. I bought one when I was a freshmen and I just had problem after problems.

Don't buy a branded computer like dell or compaq. Build your own. If you don't know how then buy a computer from your local pc shop. Have them build you one.
Dells and compaqs come with too much bloatware, and then it's nearly impossible to upgrade. That's my suggestion.

There's a new market now for computers with the duo core crap out there. Then there's SATA hard drives with RAID and all other types of acronym. Basically, as with us all, you want a well rounded computer. I agree with the other posters...don't buy Dell or Sony. They have proprietary components. Like...power supply. So if yours goes out your not going to be able to go to best buy and replace it. You will have to order it from dell. But you do get a warranty. Sooo...it's on you. I would never buy from there. So I would buy my own. As I recently did.

You don't need DUO core...it's pointless for almost any system really.

Check it.
Case- All cases come with power supplies. 53.00
Motherboard - PC Chips LGA775 Socket. 50.00
Pentium 3.0. 80.00
Hard Drive - Didn't buy one...already have 2. You will probably want a 160 gig SATA. 83.00
Ram- 512mb ram DDR2 www.tigerdirect.com 60.00

Thats 420 bucks.

Also keep in mind monitor even flat screens are cheap. But if you already have a flat screen tv/hdtv/LCD tv that has a VGA/HDMI/S-Video connection. You won't have to buy a monitor. Just buy a video card 50-600 dollars. A normal 128mb video card will work.

Two types of video cards...well more than that but the two basic ones are PCI-Express or AGP compatible. I have AGP it's older but still does the trick for almost anything or game I play.

Okay now with all that and prices. You can check out "barebone systems" that are a little cheaper. Personally I just find it more pleasin to put everything together myself.

Hey !!!

Great that u are as passionate as me on music and photos and i ahve my PC's for the same purpose. I am a photgrapher and have had same problem. What you do is just simply get the system assembeled and then asked the to install LINUX. That will solve all ur problems and LINUX are virus free and never crashes.

Cheers

You don't need to buy an anti-virus neither anti-spyware.
one of the best software for this purpose it's AVG, just go to www.grisoft.com. and download the free AVG edition.
On the other hand I don't now how much are you willing to spend on a computer. but if you don't like HP you can try different brands.

Vaio
Apple
Gateway
Acer

If you're into iTunes, photos and internet, a Mac would be your best choice. Well, actually, a Mac is always your best choice. You wouldn't need any anti-virus on a Macintosh.

Hi. As long as you don't plan on doing much video work, almost any modern machine will probably meet your needs. A larger harddrive will help you store your pictures (about 1,000 pictures per GB) and your apps and work. I prefer AMD because I have built my last two and found them to be easier to 'Play' with.
