This is frightening, our material obsessed culture of today have become zombies to the TV and hoarding of wealth. I fear for the next generation as America ends its golden age.

Peace was a catch word back then. What most of the hippy group wanted was to not be drafted strictly for selfish reasons not for any sort of personal belief. They attended a lot of demonstrations because it was simply the place to be, not for any deeply felt beliefs. They pretty much wanted to lay around, get high and party. The psycho-babble that came out of the movement was just a way to excuse their lack of ambition.
Most came from well to do or middle class families. They were pretty spoiled. So they just kept believing that others would take care of them. It would work for a while until the other person got tired of footing the bills.
Wanting to get rich is by far a more noble goal than anything the incredibly naive children of the 60's were after. People who what to "placate" violence are just ignorant of the fact that, that is impossible to do. These are people who think the lack of conflict is peace. That is not so. The lack of threat is peace.
If someone is biding his time and building his strength to attack you, you will live in a period of perceived peace. It will remain peaceful until he strikes. That is a fool's peace. The only real peace a country could ever know is to be so strong that an attack on you would be foolhardy. If you are weak, there will always be others who want to take what you have.
If you desire peace, prepare for war.

Don't see the connection between getting rich and war, but as to the change in what they want, let me take a stab at that:
it would be because a larger proportion of college students was already rich in the 1960s. Being already rich they didn't have to become rich.
Absolute economic mobility has increased dramatically in the last 40 years.

Hi Short Bus, I think you answered your own question
The goal of getting rich naturally subjegates any feelings
of pity for 'losers' or war victims..../any others except 'self'!
In the 60's the themes were giving not getting. The 60's gave us a great list of services started for helping others, like
give-a-ways, which came from Native American Indian culture and lifestyle. We started Free Lunches for the hungry and homeless, Free Clothing give-aways to the needy, even Free Clinics for those in need of medical attention and even vaccinations for babies! Living in harmony with God, Nature and Other beings on this earth is still a worthy goal!

you might not like this answer, but it seems to me the most plausible explanation for the big difference in generations is astrology.
The hippie generation had neptune (the planet of religion) in libra (the sign of peace) so they believed in peace.
The current freshmen have neptune in Capricorn (the sign of success) so they believe in success.
I find it seems to explain everything quite neatly.
We can also predict that the next lot are going to be Aquarius which is radical and idealistic - so we better be prepared.

affirmation bias is habitual characteristic of an untrained recommendations, the priority is compounded by ability of the fact that incredibly some falsehood has crept into Islam by fake and fabricated comments wrongly ascribed to the Prophet Pbuh and declared Sahih. as a result the ensuing shaky base awareness contributes in the direction of fixation on the falsehood or incredibly much less significant factor of Deen.

The hippie generation was subject to the draft. That's the beauty of Congressman Rangel's plan. Just watch the Red Stater's turn to peace nicks when there's a chance they'll be made to serve.

the moral decline of a nation.
we have no sense of community or of empathy.
some of us feel let down and feel like we could never win the fight to have values (like peace) and philosophies/practices (like diplomacy) part of mainstream culture and we give up.
others are even more disenchanted, they just don't care. they want their money, their materials, their lives where they don't put forth effort unless they are garenteed some gratification/reward
I wouldn't say egocentrism is to blame. I'd say a society that can't balance individuality with community is too blame.
its sad.

It's a sign of the times and it speaks volumes about the example our "leaders" are setting us.
"Greed is Good" has replaced "Love and Peace".
