i get tired of seeing the same posts and answers about america winning and victory. what is a victory for america? what will be classified as a victory? do people not realize that america is no longer fighting a war. the iraqis are fighting among themselves, and we are caught in the middle. we have no clear enemy, only "insurgents" who are from both sect of the nation. i just dont understand how this is still considered our war and what will justify bringing the troops home.

-A reasonable question. Your right, the war, in the literal sense ended with the fall of Baghdad. This is, God help us, the reconstruction. Would you agree that a stable Iraq with a governing regime less dangerous than Saddam's* would be something we could call a victory?
-No matter what someone thinks of the how or why of the war, a moderate democratic Iraq which is stable is certainly in our national interest. A completely collapsed Iraq in a old Lebanon type state would not.
-Can this ''victory'' be achieved by the presence of our troops? Well that's the million dollar question isn't it. The Iraqi government believes so. They have asked us to stay. Our field commanders do, although they could be plain wrong.
-There are real reasons to stay. There are real dangers in our allowing the Nation of Iraq to collapse. I believe that the question of if it is worth more American lives is a just one to ask. I feel it is, but am open to other's ideas.

* Recall that Bill Clinton had called Saddam dangerous, and had set regime change as a target of his administration. Saddam had built, concealed, and used chemical weapons on both his own people and other nations. He did fire rockets into Israel. He did attempt to build a cannon to fire shells into Israel. He did build a breeder reactor once before, which the Israelis (can you blame then?) destroyed. He did support terrorist groups (no, not Al'Qeada). He was an erratic and dangerous man who Clinton was right to wish seen removed.

Victory will be when the governments of the Middle Eastern countries can control their own people to prevent a tragedy like 9/11 from happening again.

In a war with minimal casualties. Took out an evil dictator stabilized a country liberated a country. Showed the rest of the world finally what the consequences are for starting crap!! I could go on but I really dont want to confuse you anymore.

We NEVER were fighting a war except the one Bush made up to cover up what was actually happening. The American public has been duped for so long on this whole issue that it'll take a while for most of us to understand. It never was our war and the only victory for us now is to get the hell out before one more of our people is killed or injured and let them fight it out for themselves. I'm sick and tired of this country having to resolve every other country's problems. If it weren't for the oil we never would have gotten involved and Bush only used 9/11 as an excuse to get people fired up over his "war on terror" and volunteer to die for nothing. I hope he goes down in history as the WORST president ever! He certainly has proved himself incompetent in so many ways. I can't wait for 08!

Let me guess, you got your information from the liberal congressmen and women.
Don't be closed minded.
The terrorist groups have stated on Al Jazeera that they must take Baghdad. Even recently this appears to be their plan.
How are you sure the "insurgents" aren't actually members of these terrorist groups? They don't announce who they are, they don't have any kind of identifying feature.
Make sure before you join the "Give up gang".
Victory is simply when we no longer have a threat against us from these groups. If we have to kill them all, so be it.
