If you have an older system with three or four RAM slots, it's possible that its maximum is less than a gig, in which case it won't recognize a 512 MB stick.

Suggestion: visit an online RAM seller (such as www.crucial.com) and have it scan your system. The scan will tell you things like:

- How many RAM slots you have (and which ones are in use)

- How much RAM you have installed (total and in each slot)

- The maximum RAM your system can handle

- What RAM sticks the site sells which are compatible with your computer. If it doesn't list any 512 sticks as being compatible, then that would explain why your new 512 stick doesn't work.

It's also possible that you might have a bad 512 stick, so another thing to try is to pull the two 256 sticks, install JUST the 512, boot it up and see how much RAM the system detects.

Yet another possibility, as the other answerers said: it could be that on your computer you have to install the RAM sticks in matched pairs. This doesn't happen as often for newer computers as it used to, but it's still possible. Good luck!

Try the 512 alone. If it still does not work, it is the wrong memory for the PC. Or it has to be in pairs to work (depending on the type of memory)

If it works along, then it is a different type or speed from the other two chips and not compatible with them.

Either way, you will need to exchange it for memory of the same type and speed as the two chips already in the PC, or purchase a second 512 to match the first.

Check and see if you need to install them in pairs. If you have 2 x 256 chips and only 1x512 chip (assuming you have 4 slots), you may need to get a second 512 chip if it is dual channel. I always just say that its best to install as pairs.

It is depends on you mother board, if there is three slots, then you can add one more 512. if there is only two slots then change both, but if you replace only one it will also help.

some time it is batter build new pc. because you might spend more money to upgrade your old pc. When you build new pc than you are having new mother board with faster CPU with more RAM. and all other stuff.

You need to know two things, if the computer handles DDR or DDR2 ram. Older models usually use DDR(SDRAM). Then you have to know what model it is. My laptop uses PC2700, so check on your old ram to see what model it is i.e PC2100, PC3200, etc.. there's a whole bunch of 'em.
You could either get two 512mb sticks to get 1 Gb or ram, or just one 1Gb stick.
Hope I could help you out, -Ryan

Well I usually ask my vendor to buy back the earlier ones (at lower prices of course), and get a large single piece since that would give me an option to buy another 1 GB piece 6-12 months later ;-)
