Floppy drives get very dusty since they are rarely used anymore. Trying cleaning the drive with canned air or a special floppy drive for that purpose. You may want to invest in a flash drive for the future.

Does the computer you are trying to use have Word on it? If not, you can not open the file.

Try the floppy in another computer (check the local library if nothing else). If you see the file (you do not have to open it, just see it) then attach it to an e-mail and send it to yourself at the other computer. If you can not see it on the library computer, the disk is bad.

Save the word file from the laptop as a "rich text format". You can then open it in Wordpad on your desktop.
