Hi i have a samsung p28 laptop and i am using win xp proffesional with 738mb ram, as soon as some heavy work is done the fan starts making noise. I have got the laptop cleaned and shown to the Service Center but back from the Centre it started again. Please help me identify the problem. It is under warantee and does it need fan replacement. Thanks in advance.

if it is still under warranty get the fan replaced. It is a mechanical problem, either they shud fix it or replace it. If they do not pay for it n u do not want to spend money on new fan, try buying an external cooler for laptop which shud be much cheaper. Also use ur laptop in cooler environment and try to ventilate the bottom surface to avoid the fan from getting started.

That is a normal operation of the fan. Keep in mind that the fan is trying to keep the CPU cool. The more you demand of it the harder it has to work. Also always make sure that the vents are not blocked. A laptop has almost all the same funtions as a desktop but in a more restricted space. Keeping them cooler is harder. If when you are at idle and doing nothing it calms down then it is functioning normal. Biggest issue I have found is that people are unaware of the exhaust vents and accidentaly block them off. Sometimes simply by putting it on thier lap. You can look into a laptop cooler or chillpad if this is really bothering you. Most computer stores will sell those.

Okay a few details about Notebook/Laptop fans.

1. They do not run continiously. Only when heat becomes an issue.

2. CPU Fans should not be very loud. And their sound should mimic a soft breeze, but a steady flow. (Sound wise)

3. CPU Fans should not tick, click, knock, or whistle. Only the sound of it's motor and the air it is moving should be audiable.

If your fan is making abnormally loud sounds or ticks.. I suggest immediate replacement. This is not a problem to mess around with. Overheating could result in CPU damage which in turn, could take out the motherboard and or ram.

I suggest accessing your systems bios and downclock the CPU to a slower speed. This wil lreduce the heat issue and should also limit the amount of fan usage. However, this fix is not intended to be a long term fix, but rather a "Get you by" fix.

OOoo sounds like my HP this year! I hope you have better luck! (My HP overheated and I had to get CPU/memory/hard drive replaced, then I had to re-install all my software and personal information...grrr). Laptops are notorious for overheating, just because the fan is on the bottom. One thing to do is keep it well-elevated at all times. Another is to buy one of those devices (you can even get them, if you want, that plug into and are powered through a USB port) that offer auxiliary cooling and elevation under your laptop and also, as a side benefit, padding for your lap. They are pads, about a laptop or more deep and about six inches or more wider than a laptop, and cost in the neighborhood of $70. I wish you the very best of luck!
