There are two lines on a pregnancy test. The first one is the line which indicates that the test is working - usually the darker of the two and the one that shows up first. The second line is the one that registers the hCG hormone in your urine, indicating that you are pregnant. This second line may be very faint or quite dark, but is rarely as dark as the first one. If there are no lines (or the first one is very light), there is something wrong with the test. If there is only one dark line, the test is negative. If there are two lines (no matter how light the second line is), the test is positive. That said, home pregnancy tests aren't 100% accurate but are pretty close. You are far, far less likely to get a false positive than a false negative. If the second line was faint, the test is picking up some level of hCG in your system. Wait a few days and take another test - this allows time for your hCG to increase if you are in fact pregnant - so next time you may get a less ambiguous result.

Edit to add:
It is very important to follow the instructions included with the test. You only want to read the test within the allotted time frame (3 to 5 minutes after taking it). A positive result will stay positive for hours, if not days. A negative result, tho, is only valid in the first 10 minutes. A negative may change to a positive over time but this is not a valid result if the positive did not show up in the first 5 minutes.

Okay, as long as you see the second line you can consider yourself pregnant. It may be light because of it being too early and not enough hcg was present for the test. Wait a week and test again. The hormone should raise and be more present.

it is a line that shows up after the allotted time on a pregnancy test. like 30 mins to an hour or longer after you take a test.
