Turtle skin does not need to stay wet. Turtles only NEED water to hunt and eat in, to feel safe in, to mate in, etc. They can be kept dry for up to about 20 hours a day.

The question is 'why'?

Did yours escape? Dehydration and thirst is an issue, especially if it is young. Start looking near the place it went missing from and look in and under EVERYTHING. It probably did not go far.

Want to let yours out for a walk or to sun and play? If you have an outdoor 'pond'- even a children's play pool with a dry island or something, a few hours of sun a day are good- if the temps are OK, shade is available, etc.

Generally, however, your main habitat should be nice enough that you should not need to stress the turtle by taking it out of its home like that.

Are you keeping it out for medical reasons? A simple 'dry tank' is a great solution for many medical issues, as long as you balance the psychological stress it has by being dry against the medical needs.

If necessary they can stay out of water for several hours. However, make sure you provide them with a damp towel to lay on or cover themselves with. Most slider turtles climb up out of the water to lay down on their own anyways.
