It's from the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. They built a computer to answer the ultimate question. The answer was 42. Then they created Earth to determine the ultimate question but it got bulldozed at the last minute to make way for a highway.

This is a gimmick, a publicity catch phrase type of verbal gadget. Or, at its best it is just a red herring, a ridiculously meaningless intrigue made to instil in the mind to keep it thoughtlessly ticking alongside other equally whimsical and idiosyncratic things in a completely nonsensical and fantastically funny world created Douglas Adam.
For goodness sake, this book is meant to make you laugh, not to think, and definitely not to entice you into laborious and arduous world of philosophical thinking to find the meaningfulness of life, why people do not see this. Or on the other hand, why don’t they simply accept that forty-two is indeed the answer to life, the universe and everything, and be happy with this wanting nothing else to know, and thus living peacefully, chanting the number every morning for the rest of their lives.

why do so many people wonder what the meaning is? if you knew the meaning do you think you would change the way you live your life jut because somone has told you that you should? anyone who does not know within themselves what the true meaning is does not believe they have meaning in their life and they will contnue to disbelieve for their life, if you do believe their s meaning in yor life, you understand what themeaning of your life is and will not be swayed from that belief for your life.

Well, for majority I would say that people think they (themselves) are here to do something or change something whether it's for the better or create soemthing new. But in my opinion, we are not here for ourselves. We are here for one another. If you think about it, since we were all born we all had someone else to help us along the way in our journey through life. Someone to teach us how to talk, to walk, to understand, to have faith in something, to understand emotions, and even as far as finding our identity if we lose it somewhere along the way.

We are put here in life not to seek answers to to ask questions. The more you ask, the more you will know and inherently ask more questions about what else you haven't asked.

because they read that book, "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". a bit of a dumb answer if you ask me (not that anybody does:-) you'll do better to read the works of George Orwell, especially 1984
