With the majority of people now having internet access ... should we look to realign the democratic process so each of us can vote on specific house bills?

Face it, our democratic system was largely formed as a representative system because it wasn't practical to have all Americans vote at the house and senate level to pass laws and so forth. Now that we have mass communication vehicles that could allow all Americans instant access to the voting process ... shouldn't we consider altering how laws are passed? Maybe we could eliminate our representatives simply by creating a vehicle that allows each of us to represent ourselves.

How do you suppose we would regulate who voted and prove, beyond all doubt that the person actually voted. We can't keep anything secure on the internet and voting is one thing that should not have any security flaws. It is bad enough governments are using machines that don't have a paper trail associated with them.

That's a fantastic idea, and that's pretty much what they do in the world's only true democracy - Switzerland. However using the internet would present problems such as garunteeing only one vote per person. Each person would have to be issued with an ID and a password to make sure that they could only vote once on each issue. You would also have to present a set of other options to people who DON'T have internet access. Perhaps a government issued mobile phone like device that was sent to EVERYONE would work? If democracy and voting was that easy it would surely reduce voter apathy as well.

Yes. The only problem with that is people will start their infectious tampering with system put down. But, we could control that. It's to get rid of half of our government and replace a new system. That actually speaks for the people. Not for big name donations.

People without access could walk to a library.

I think making it easier to vote will help, but considering the Internet insecurity is not wise. Indirect impact on politics is already enormous! It should be used more to show the facts about politicians what they stand for what the voted for and what they are lying about!

You are asking two different questions, role of Internet and should we change the political process itself.

No, there isn't a system that is fully hacker proof, and some politicians would get experts to do such dirty work. There are sometimes questions with the present system; my opinion internet voting would invite problems.
