There isn't, Hard Rock is sub genre of Rock in general and Metal Is a Sub Genre of Hard Rock many people mislabel artists and their styles. You have to realize there are over 100 sub genres in the rock genre.

The difference is hard rock you can understand, heavy metal is a bunch noise.
