had to start this one, everyone is talking about JaMarcus Russell and Brady Quinn. Calvin Johnson and Adrian Peterson will both be better NFL players though. Here's why. Both are positions to make immediate success in the NFL. Peterson is a hard runner with speed and agility. Calvin Johnson might be the best athlete in any sport ever. He ran a 4.3, is 6'4", has amazing coordination, and is clean off the field. What you guys think?

Having watched Jamarcus Russell through out his high school and college career, I would have to say you are underestimating him. I agree about Johnson and Peterson having an immediate impact, but Russell is the real deal. He ain't the sharpest tool in the shed but his physical ability and size should not be taken lightly. He also excelled in pressure situations at LSU repeatedly.

If you ask any pro scout, running back is usually the safeset position to pick in a draft, regardless of player or team. Few running backs totally fail, while many QBs, WRs, defenders and O-linemen fail.

Having said that, some scouts believe that Calvin Johnson is a "can't miss" player. Of course, that was said about Charles Rodgers, Jeff George and Ryan Leaf. If it were me, and I were drafting for the Raiders, I would trade out of number one. You will not build a champion from one draft. You build it though free agency and several drafts over the course of three years or so. Case in point, The Cowboys took Irvin in 88, Aikman in 89 and Smith in 90, but where they really took off was trading Hershel Walker for a load of picks.

Like the Cowboys in 89, the Raiders have huge holes to fill all over the place. If they could turn this number one into two number ones and maybe a number five over the next couple of seasons and then use those picks to get even more, they would be served much better.

Calvin Johnson is the 'can't miss' guy of this draft, Adrian Peterson could be good but has had a history of injuries. Russell and Quinn are QBs, granted good college QBs but that mean next to nothing in the NFL.

Its to early to tell. If I was an NFL owner I would much rather spend big money on a Running back then a QB or a Wr. Ill agree with you that WR and RB have a much better chance of making immediate success. Just look at the Running backs taken in the first round for the first few years, Caddillaic Williams, Laurence Maroney, Joseph Addai, Ronnie Brown, all have made huge impacts for their teams. But WR's a little different, it ussually takes a few solid years before you can tell if a Wr is going to be special or not. Look at the last few Wide outs taken in the first round, none have been as productive as they where said to be. As for pegging him the best athlete ever, I think the same arguement was made on Reggie Bush last year, so im not going to get on that horse just yet.

It seems to me that NFL teams are pushing for Rookies to start much earlier then they normally would, or probably should. Matt Lienert, Vince Young, Alex Smith, Eli Manning, Jay Cutler were all starting their rookie seasons. The same will probably hold true for Russell and Quinn, whether their ready or not. Id look for Russell, Quinn, Johnson and Peterson to all make starts during their rookie season, but Peterson will probably have the best production of them all.

I think it is just way too early to tell. I remember about 10 yrs ago Ki-Jana Carter was the #1 pick and everyone had enormous expectations for him, blew out his knee the first game and was barely heard from since.

Peterson has already been hurt in the past, and with the number of hits he is going to take I wouldn't put it past him to be hurt again.

Johnson should be really good, but he has to rely on a quarterback, he won't do squat without one.

That is why Russell and Quinn are so valuable. They will make receivers jobs easier and stretch the defense.

sure, those position players may be better right out of the gate, but a Quarterback has a longer life span in the NFL. If either of those quarterbacks are worth the hype, they could have better careers. Look at Peyton, wasnt the greatest right off the bat, but will be a hall of famer. Same can be said for Tom Brady....Cant just look at their first year or two if your talking about being a better NFL player...gotta look at the career.
