Well yes, technically, "bastard" is just a term that means a child from unmarried parents.
The word bastard isn't usually used in it's correct sense any more, most people just say it as an insult without knowing what it even means. It is pretty much a "dead word" when it comes to being true to it's meaning, as there ae lots of children born out of wedlock now and it's not seen as wrong, as it was years ago.
I have a son from an unmarried relationship. He's 5 now, and nobody has ever referred to him as a bastard (they wouldn't dare - lol!!), but seriously, mine and his father's relationship didn't work out, but my son is wonderful and loved by everyone, so don't worry about your child being picked on either!
I am 35 weeks pregnant with a little girl now and me and my partner aren't married either! However, he has taken on my son as his own, and we are as happy and excited about our baby as any married couple, and we were TTC. I don't see why a peice of paper and a white dress should make a difference nowadays!? We live togather as a family anyway. I don't feel that want to spend all that money on getting married at the moment, as there are other much more important things we'd like to do with it (biuld a house, our children etc..) - that's the only reason we're not married!
So NO, I don't think it's a bad thing at all, but I also doubt very much you will ever hear that word associated with your child unless you are talking to someone very antiquated!
Congrats and good luck!! :-)

NO, thats malarky! don't listen to those people ..
that's rediculous .. you or your child are no less of people because you are not married to the father .. if anyone ever says that .. you just tell them "We're ALL God's Children" and as the bible says, "We are ALL created equal".
Don't ever let anyone ever try to bring you or your child down. You two are the same as every other red blooded person on the face of this earth.
Besides, "bastard" is just another cuss word used in todays society ... someone can call you a bastard without even knowing your parental background. Don't worry about it.
God bless!

I dont believe this... im pregnant with my first child.. im 13 weeks.. and me and the father are not married.. but we do live together... Marriage is just a paper... plus he has a child with a previous girl and the child only becomes a BASTARD child if the father duz not pay child support and the state has to pay for the baby, OR if the father is unknow... that is what our lawyer said.

I have heard that before. I guess that would make me a bastard too =) My parents weren't married either. I really don't think people say that much anymore just because times have changed and more and more people are actually not married but are having kids. I wouldn't worry about it though. If others don't like it...then that is their problem, not yours. Best of luck to you. And congrats.

That's the definition of bastard, yes. It's more derived from back in they day when men had wives and mistresses-- and the baby's from their mistresses would be consdiered "bastard" or "Illegitimate" children and they usually had no rights to inheritances and such, while the "legitimate" children got all the perks.
Nowadays its so common on one sees it as a big deal. Don't fret...... no one will call your child a bastard.

The definition of the word bastard is someone who doesn't know his paternity. Since you know your babies father he will not be a bastard. BUT in some states if your not married when your baby is born, they do not have a legal father.

Yes, according to the technical definition of the word. But don't worry about it. Society is much more progressive than that. If you were planning on getting married anyway, it might be nice to move the date up. But never marry someone just because you are pregnant.

Yes the word bastard originally refered to a child born out of wedlock. It has since come to mean something rather different. It's not a very nice word and few people use it in it's original context now.

Maybe 50-100 years ago, when that sort of thing was taboo. But now it's more common and I don't think it is very civilized to call anyone's child whose parents aren't married a bastard.
