Water is charged for everywhere. Most restaurants have overhead built into their prices to cover the cost of things like water, bread, salt, pepper, etc...

When you get charged for water it just means that the restaurant you are at has not taken the time to adjust their prices to hide the cost of water.

One interesting thing now is the movement to get rid bottled water in restaurants. Many restaurants are now phasing out bottled water in favor of serving water from filtered taps.

it really depends on where you go to get water. Most fast food resturants dont charge anything for water then there are places that charge 10 to 25 cents for water. Its mostly to cover the cost of the cup, straw, and lid. But then other places just charge because they can. They'll tell you that it has to cover the cost of washing the glass. Pathetic i know.

Air is being charged for! It has been years sense I could put air in a tire for free. Usually it costs fifty cents. This always Irritates. It's not the money, It's the principal of the thing.

Well they claim that they are charging for the cup that you use at fast food restaurnts. I used to work at mcdonald's and I always thought that was stupid too. I t also depends on what size of cup you ask for. At fast foods places they have a happy meal cup they give u only with a couple of swallows worth of water. These places sure are getting greedy. You now have to ask for ketchup napkins etc..or you don't get it. I agree it is crazy! HA HA !! BLUEBUNNY

Yes, I agree with what everyone has said about the cups. I used to work in just such a restaurant and I was told that if people had their own cups (like people travelling) we could fill them with water for free...but that we had to charge a minimum amount for the cup itself.

There are some people that will get what ever money they can from where ever they can. That is just the way they are brought up.
Funny thing is this is a stereotype for Asian shop owners. They say for every stereotype there is a degree of truth.

some asian restaurants charge for water but not for tea...the tea is complimentary and the water is not...some places charge a few cents for the cup they give you instead of the water...they are a business and are looking to make a profit

those places that charge for water are actually charging for the cup, not the water....and at the McDonalds i work at, we don't charge a cent for a cup of water, but you get a 16 oz cup, equivalent to a small soda...and we also sell dasani bottled water, which we would rather you bought than asking for a complimentary water cup...(there's a profit margin in the dasani, but none in the cup of water)

I think they are making up for the cost of the cup they have to give you...not the water.

If they don't charge then everyone will be asking for free water. So they will not sell as much other drinks as they do.
