You can find a wide variety of annuals at your local nursery or home center that are good for the hot dry climate in AZ. When planting small flowers like annuals you want to use a planting bed consisting of mostly potting soil. If you are just purchasing flowering shrubs like Gardenia or Lantana or something similar, then all you need to do is dig in existing soil and water thoroughly to get established.

Arizona is a large state with many variations of soil and climate. Gardening in Flagstaff or Phoenix will be different.
