I don't get the logic of this argument. Any explanation will be appreciated!

You are absolutely right. The only way US can outlast the militants and the turmoil in Iraq is to create an occupation force and build permanent military bases, just like in Germany after World War 2.

Haliburton and the Military Industrial Complex would love that.

Imagine two scenario's in which you are abducted and dumped in the ocean, with no land in sight.

In the first instance, you have no idea where you are, and can only assume that, as the hours drag into days, that no ships ever go into this remote part of the ocean, and that continuing to fight the cold and fatigue is pointless. You are going to drown. You give up.

In the second instance, you knew your coordinates, and that twice a week fishing boats ply these waters. In this case, you have hope, and something to live for. You know that you can survive with enough determination, are definitely going to fight tooth and nail to stay alive.

Giving the insurgents a timetable is like telling the guy you've dumped in the ocean exactly how long it will take for a rescue boat to appear.

In an intercepted letter from Al-Zarkawi to his followers, he implored his followers to keep fighting even though the cause appeared hopeless. Coalition forces were beating the cr@p out of them, cut off their funding, and made it impossible to even communite by phone. Everything was being monitored. For every coalition soldier killed, 1,000 insurgents were arrested or killed. It looked hopeless.

However, Al-Zarkawi gave the insurgents comforting words of ultimate victory: inevitably, in every American conflict, stupid, naive American "anti-war" protesters will derail support for the conflict, and force the U.S. to prematurely leave before the job is completed.

Al-Zarkawi was throwing his drowning supporters a life preserver.

Now you understand how a timetable emboldens the insurgents. It gives them hope. They would literally draw a big red circle on their calendars and just wait for that day to resume their mayhem. A timetable is beyond stupid.

I still haven't seen the logic about the positives of a timetable. Last year the Left complained Bush was not listening to the Military leaders, now the Military leaders all say a timetable is a foolish idea and Bush listens, But the left now disagrees. Same with the Surge the left was all for it up to December last year, but now against. wow talk about putting politics above logic. I can see why the Palosi congress has been on a steady decline and now at 24% approval rating.

The timetable will embolden the insurgents to continue fighting. Not all the insurgents live there and most if not all of their support is coming from outside.

Don't you get it? If the insurgency just wanted us out they would have stopped long ago and laid low until we left. They must keep fighting so they can claim they drove us out.
Why do you suppose they need to do that? To inspire others to follow them.

They want you to believe the insurgents will all buy plane tickets to the US the very minute we pull out of southern Iraq.

You are correct, Iraq is in a Civil War, a war between people who live there. We don't.
