I forgot to sign up for our office surprise birthday party, so by the time I remembered, I was the last one... which meant the only item left to sign up for was THE CAKE!

This is a large party - 40 people and now they want me to buy a cake to feed everyone!!! Everyone else is bringing in soda, chips, paper products, cheap dishes, now I have to go buy a $50 cake????

I say eff it and stay home...or show em all and bake a cake..lol
that is kinda crappy, you place of employment should buy the cake , in my opinion.

~This does appear to be a very poor way to handle office birthday parties~ Do you have a suggestion box at work? You might consider suggesting that every employee donate $5.00 per month, every month (someone needs to be designated keeper of the cash and records), even if there may not be a party for say the month of July, the money still accumulates in the fund. You said there is approximately 40 people so that is $200.00 in the birthday fund each month, thats a pretty nice party (if there are 4 birthdays in the mont of May, still only one party). The $200.00 is plenty for a birthday cake, icecream, chips, paper plates, soda. The old sign up sheet stinks because one person may beat feet to the sign up (likely the manager that is hangin it up) and continuously says I will bring the $1.99 napkins every time. Obviously if $5.00 is too much this can be decreased based of food, cake and sodas. (Costco does do a nice large cake for about 23.95, definitley will feed 40 employees)

That's what happens when you're the last one. Could you make a cake or cupcakes yourself? That would be much more cost efficient for you, and you will still fulfill your obligation to participate in the party. Don't look at it in a negative way you don't want to have bad feelings about your job or the people you work with just because of a frickin' cake, do ya? Having this happen will bring you good karma, and next time you will get to bring the $2 bag of chips. Hope that helps.

If it's an office surprise party - the office should handle paying for the cake and the "big" cost items. Things like this are tax deductible. If the office won't pay for it - then everyone should chip in for the cake- $1.00 - and then also everyone should bring a necessary side item.

Are 40 people bringing all of that stuff?
Sounds like you will have an abundance of chips, paper products etc.

I do not think in the case of something THAT expensive it is out of line to ask for $1-2 / person for an item that big. It is not very co-worker friendly to place ALL of that burden on someone else. If 40 people are participating...surely some of them will "do the right thing".
Even if 10 pitched in $5 it wouldn't place all of the responsibility on 1 wallet.

That's crap! I would say something to the party organizer. You cant have a $50 cake on the list and a $2 bag of chips! The entire office should pitch in for the cake. Girl, I wont show up for work that day.

No, I wouldn't think that is fair. I would suggest bringing in something else and have everyone chip in a couple bucks to buy the cake or else there won't be a cake. Surely everyone would understand and pitch in.

See if you can get everyone to donate $1, as your item is by far the most expensive and volunteer to put in the extra ($10 or so).
I hope that works. I hate sign up sheets at office parties - it's never equal.

At my work, the company buys the cake and any major food themselves. (Using money in the budget) Maybe you could make cupcakes instead? Or just go to the supermarket and buy on of those sheet cakes for like 19.99. I mean hopefully they will have enough other food to eat!

$50.00 is alot of dough. Better spent on a outfit than a cake. Why not get a bouple cake mixes n' make it yourself?

Is it fair? Expensive but you werent duped so I guess it is fair. You didnt have to sign up, you could have been more attentive to the signup sheet.

LEt them know you will be contributing eqaully in dollars what everyone else is doing. Whoever organized it needs to do a course in event coordination 101. When we do stuff like this we ensure the dollar value is equal.

Ask if there is anyone who would like to split the cost or you can refuse to attend or buy a cake in value for what others have spent.
