It takes place during WW II. The students are evacuated in order to keep them away from the Japanese, so the indications are perhaps toward the beginning of the war, which could be, in the Pacific, anytime from about 1939-1942 and the airplane is shot down and from the hints in the text it takes place at a time when the children cannot be immediately and easily rescued.

It should be during WWII. However, the airplane the boys were on was shot down, wasnt it?

I had to read this book last year in English. The author never really specifies when the book takes place, although it is obvious by the unique design of the plane the boys were in, it is sometime in the distand future.
