They run in the women in my family and I am getting them at a much younger age than my mother and grandmothers. Is there anything I can do to slow this process or get rid of them all together?

Varicose veins are often hereditary. There isn't too much you can do to prevent them but you can slow down their progress by:
avoiding prolonged standing
staying thin
exercising regularly
high fiber diet
no tight clothing
avoiding anything that causes straining (coughing, constipation)
wear TED stockings (can be purchased at drug store)

Be aware that they worsen also in pregnancy.

There is no home remedy. The only treatments are:
sclerotherapy - injecting the veins to obliterate them
laser therapy
surgery

Surgery involves several types:
ligation - tying off the saphenous vein
stripping - removing the saphenous vein
avulsion - removing all veins that are outlining the skin
radio frequency ablation - kills vein using heat
endo vascular laser - kills the vein with laser
