I thought about it and came up with this-- some women stay in
the closet much longer than their male counter parts and it's easier to do No one thinks a second thought when they see
a woman embrace or kiss another because it's a socially accepted norm. The baby boomers are in their fifties and sixities now and many have lost their spouse and have close bonds with their women friends that might evolve into a different type of relationship.

Still other's have played the part expected of them their entire lives, and now the kids are grown and thankfully GONE they
can now live an more uninhibited life style and explore their
sexual desires more fully and many always KNEW, but didn't
want their friends and family to know, but now that they've gotten older want to live their lives as they choose.

As for the younger set, in this day and age the stigma of lesbianism has greatly been reduced and become more accepted, though it might still tramatize the family, or make
others offended, in reality many people these days see it as no big deal ,or even cool, because so many teen idols have
admited to being gay, tv stars, actresses and other prominent
people in the public eye openly admit their different life styles,
so it is no longer as horrible a decision to be open concerning sexual preferences as it was even ten years ago.

There are in my opinion two reasons.

In the first place the great existing promiscuity amongst young people since th mid 60s (particularly in the Western World) is contributing to spread the desire to explore new sexual experiences, meaning homosexual practices.

I belong to the masculine gender, and I'm old enough to have realized the dramatic change in our approach to women when it comes to sex. The American series "Friends" is a clear instance of what I'm saying. When a young man contacts a young girl, their only concern is where they will spend the night, that very same day. Your home or my home...

Too much easy sex probably , disenchant girls and motivates them to look for something entirely different.

The other explanation I think is that there have always been lesbians, except now, with all the freedom we are supposed to have, they feel more emancipated and no longer ashamed of disclosing their homosexuality.

I doubt the actual number of lesbians is growing as a percentage of the population, they are just getting greater exposure.

Two factors are at work, the first is the fact that it is more acceptable in society to be gay, therefore we see more lesbians who are "out of the closet." The second, is the fact that we as a society are communicating with more people and so your chances of meeting or being exposed to alternative lifestyles and those that live them is much greater.

Don't let all of that girl-kissing-girl or girl-making out with-girl stuff let you think that there are more lesbians. If anything, I think it's just one of two things: experimenting or showing off. The experimenters are just curious, which I guess I have no problem with. But the showing off ones, the ones who kiss another girls with there are guys around because they think it turns on the guys are the ones I would hate if i were a lesbian. To them it's sort of a joke. but trust me, when the time comes, when they hit their mid or late 20s, most of the ones doing that will settle down and marry a man and act like their "lesbian" phase never existed, like their patron saint Anne Heche.

I think a lot of it has to do with men cheating on their women. If a woman has had any experience sexually with another woman or is just drawn to the same sex, it's not hard for them to switch bases at all. For me personally, I don't give a damn what a man does, I just don't have it in me to ever sleep with same sex and I've never been attracted to the same sex. I'm not blaming one or the other. But my feeling is that because men have cheated on their spouses and girlfriends, the increase is due to that reason besides the obvious.

Maybe it is not the number but that people finally feel more comfortable with coming out of the closet. Women may be more willing to be open about it now, which is why it seems like everyone is coming out.

The percentage has not increased at all.

Fortunately, fewer and fewer people in society are bigoted and discriminatory against LGBT people, so more and more LGBT people are more comfortable letting others know they exist.

You are seeing the results of this improvement in society, where everyone is free to be exactly how God made them, whether that is LGBT or straight, without judgements.

Lately as in....???? What's your time span here? Lesbians have been around forever. There are more lesbians coming out now because we are more comfortable being open and proud. And then of course u have your bandwagon lesbians who find it fun to "act gay" when they are drunk or when the urge hits.

Are you talking about on this site, or in your home area? Either way, my best guess is that we've been here all along, we're just quieter than you thought we would be. Also, we don't feel the need to jump up and down asking questions that aren't valid. Not that yours isnt', mind you, I guess we're just better observers than anything else!

I thought all women were lesbians to a certain extent. Not trying to be rude or womanizing but I just thought that. Ask a women what they rather see. 2 guys going at it or 2 women. 99 out of 100 times they are gonna say 2 women. Why is that???
