How many many medical schools do people usually apply to during the process? I am currently preparing for the MCAT and thinking ahead about what and where to apply to, but I don't want to leave myself short changed. Any suggestions?

The first time I applied, I applied to 45 MD programs. I have a lousy undergrad GPA, but good MCAT scores, a masters degree, a relevant career, and a ton of extracurriculars and a few publications. Anyway, applying gets expensive, and I blew about $1300 on the first round of AMCAS apps, and another $900 on secondaries.

This time around, I'm down to about 15 schools, many of them are osteopathic programs, and I am applying to 2 Caribbean schools.

Most people don't apply to this many schools. If you have a GPA over 3.5 and MCAT over 30, then you can apply to 20-25 schools and that would be typical.

Be realistic about what schools would be likely to take you. It's nice to aim high, but in your heart, you should know if Harvard or UCSF are going to reject you. Have some good safety schools.

There's a good matching tool at http://www.studentdoc.com in case you want to see where your scores would be competitive.

I applied to 10 schools for the primary but only did 5 secondaries (everyone one gets these after primaries..they are how schools get more money). that was very very few to apply to but I got really focused and managed to get into most of them. When I told an interviewer I only applied to 10 schools he told me I must be extremely confident. I wasn't, but medical school applications are extremely expensive...those 10, with the computerized AMCAS and the secondaries cost me just under $1000.
