i believe humans have only 2 fundamental instincts, comfort and extension of existence.

(i really believe fear is the only fundamental instinct but that can be easily misinterpreted)

I believe there is only one, survival. All others stem from this root cause.

No I don't agree.

Misanthropists do not believe in extension of existence. As for comfort...it is relative to the individual. Some enjoy soft pillows and watching Friends while some enjoy injecting themselves with Heroin and what about fundamentalist religion that asks for ultimate sacrifices, flagellation to purify the soul....purposeful discomfort. The Crucifixion, isn't that the ultimate in selfless sacrifice of comfort. It is all relative.

fear of heights.

I'd hardly call trying to be "comfortable", an instinct. Like getting out of the rain and seeking shelter.

Fight or flight might be another "instinct", but that shouldn't really be summarized as "extension of existence" either, which is too vague.

The human race is so successful because of adaptation. Thus, the ability to adapt is an instinct for survival.

Well, there is the heirarchy of needs, that should help you understand. Once one feels that all of those primary needs have been met, then one can pursue existential needs and philosophise, which can take you anywhere your mind can dream of taking you. Look at all the fabulous inventions that have made our lives a bit easier to live, taking care of those primary needs and allowing us to think ourselves into madness : )

Ego = Taking

The other side of the coin is:

Altro = Giving
