Arrange to meet with a Big Apple Greeter www.bigapplegreeter.com before you go. This is a friendly new yorker who will get you aclimated to the city and how to get around and explore a neighborhood with you.
There are many decent budget hotels in the city. If you book early you will have a better chance of getting a decent room for a good price. I stayed at the Herald Square Hotel, basic, clean and great price. Not fancy but a central location in the garment district. Trip advisor will allow you to check out hotels before you check in. www.tripadvisor.com
I made my first trip to NYC last year alone and had a blast. Despite the rep that New Yorkers have they are friendly and helpful and the city is safe. Follow common sense rules, don't carry a lot of cash or valuables and be aware of your surroundings.
Must sees include Central Park, the Village, Grand Central Station [have a drink at the campbell apartment while you are there] and a visit to Ellis Island or a ride on the Staten Island Ferry.
Enjoy!

Check out the upper west side of Manhattan. There are a few decently priced hotels there. And I hate to say this, but try travelocity. I stayed in Midtown for about $80 a night in a nice boutique hotel. Wish I would remember the name. Another nice place to stay is a B&B in Brooklyn, I can't remember the name of it, but it is easy to find on the internet.
Definitely try El Malecon for a cheap lunch or early dinner. I believe it's on 98th and Amsterdam. I used to eat there at least twice a week. The roasted chicken is delicious and enough to feed at least 2 people. For about $9 you get a half of roasted chicken, rice and beans and a salad. You can get any sides you like, but this is what I generally chose. Make sure you get it to go. On 96th and Amsterdam there is a liquor store where you can get a reasonable bottle of wine, or a bodega where you can get some sodas. Take your lunch to Riverside or Central Park and eat while you people watch. I used to do this all the time with my guests when they came into the city. They all loved it! Take the 1, 2, 3 or 9 train to 96th street. Walk up the hill towards Amsterdam. Take a left on Amsterdam. Anyone in that neighborhood will know the restaurant. There is also a very small restaurant named Fondue downtown. It was really good. I was there about 9 months ago. Obviously, they serve fondue. Just be careful they do not always have what is on their menu in stock.

Don't listen to Alex... I have visited NYC many times over the last 15 years and I have never been mugged. I even walked across central park at 1:00 AM and never saw another soul. Its not as dangerous as people think it is. Some neighborhoods are safer than others though.
Here's a tip.... if you want to look at the tall buildings, stop walking. Just stand there and gawk. When you are walking you should pay attention to what's in front of you. Cross the streets in groups, you're much less likely to be hit by a taxi or bike messenger (those guys are insane). See Central Park!! See The Cathedral of St. John the Divine!! See the Natural History Museum, the Guggenheim, and the Metropolitan Museum if time permits. Visit McSoreley's tavern if you are of drinking age (oldest in NYC) See the WTC Site!! Ride a ferry, ride a subway (don't get lost) and take a circle line double-decker bus tour if you can afford it!! Have fun and be safe.

book your hotel room in advance and just stay in a holiday inn or some other simple chain motel.
go to Broadway show but buy the ticket on line in advance to save money .
don't even think of walking around at night in new york .
if you do go outside in the day time carry very little cash with you and keep your id and such in the hotel safe .
you most likely will get mugged it is a place that is very dangerous don't go anywhere near a place called Harlem .
use a taxi there are no cars in NY NY that don't have dents in them .
the best thing to do is not go there it is too dangerous.
