I work as a receptionist and whenever people come in and tell me they're to see someone in the office I call that person, tell them they're appointment is here, and tell the person who came in they can have a seat if they like (in one of the four seats in the lobby) because it usually takes a while for the people I work with to get to the front. But for SOME REASON these people REFUSE to sit down! They just wander around the tiny lobby and stare at me as if saying "why is it taking so long for so-and-so to get here?" Well, I told ya to sit down!! I've had people stand there for thirty minutes before! Not one person has sat down today who I have told to sit down! Is there some kind of repellent on the chairs? Should I just yell "I SAID SIT DOWN!" to the next person who comes in and doesn't sit down?

Sorry, forgot to add that bit: financial advisor office.
And I actually did tell one person to "please have a seat" to see if it would work and they STILL stood there!

Those people are just impatient and expect to be seen immediately. It's not your fault, let them stand and get tired, no skin off your back.

They must be anxious to see whomever their appt. is with. Don't know what kind of business you work for but it may be of utmost importance for these individuals and they have the "hurry, hurry" attitude (if it were me I would definitely be sitting w/ magazine in hand!). I'm familiar with the receptionist scene and all you can do is be professional, courteous and not worry about the little stuff. If you don't like the stares then consider a different avenue regarding employment. Receptionists are usually multi-skilled and talented and can fit into many positions! Keep smiling!

it truly is amazingly unhappy to have "continuously" linked to 3 words. once you sat down, after the call, on the ceremonial dinner at a tiny kitchen table, denoting solitary eating, you typed with teary eyes. yet there is solace that he referred to as even while he's to be long gone "continuously" probably by ability of being purely incapable to be contemporary anymore, no longer truly lifeless. Wow, what a chew.

Some people like myself sit all day long and it feels good to stand for a bit... they could be nervous about there visit or have anxiety about a meeting.

You could try smiling maybe even a little giggle, while looking at the empty seat. Just try to see the humor people are strange, you know?

They probably figure the wait won't be long enough to bother to sit. That's what always happens to me. As soon as my bottom touches the chair, it's time to get up again.

LOL..shout out "the first one to sit down is going to get helped first." See if that works, if it doesn't, yell "fire" and they will all go outside and you won't have to look at them.

Hey, take it easy. Just tell them it's going to be a while if you don't already. What type of office is it? tax office?

Maybe they received a super spanking the night before and are too sore to sit. Or maybe "they tarded".

Instead of telling them "Take a seat if you like", say, "They will be a few minutes, please take a seat and they will be with your shortly."

Don't give them a choice, tell them to sit their as*es down...ha ha!
