I can move the gear selector into any gear including reverse, but the mower does not move. It act llike the clutch is disengaged. The clutch rod and linkage appear to move freely and the the gear selector linkage seems to be moving up to the transaxle. Drive belt is in place.

DId you just have a tire off??
I had the same problem- took it in thinking it was the transmission and it was the " key " that goes into the shaft on the wheel hub. If you took the tire off and did not replace the Key when you put the tire back on it will mimic the symptoms of a failed clutch or transmission.
The key is a small piece of metal that the is long and retangular shaped. It has a specific groove cut out and you hammer it into place allowing the wheel to catch and move when the transmission engages.

If that is not the case then you really need to have the trans and clutch checked.

It certainly sounds like a worn out clutch. Try to shift into a gear without disengsging the clutch. If you can do that without grinding gears, one of two things is true: 1) Your clutch is not engaged, or 2) your shift linkage is not moving the gears in the transaxle.

The clutch could be worn, but that's pretty unusual for a mower. You need to verify that the clutch is actually moving with the linkage, and not "hung up".

The only other cause I can imagine is a broken driveshaft, which is also unlikely.

Check the drive belt again. Make sure that it is on all the pulleys. With the clutch/brake pedal depressed the belt should be slack and when you let out on the pedal the belt should tighten. It can be difficult to see with the mower deck in place.

Transmission? That is what the problem usually is in a vehicle with the same simptoms. You can take it in just to get it looked at. Then you can decide if it is somthing you can do yourself or with a buddie on the weekend or if you just want to go and buy a new one. Hope your problem is easily solved. Good luck!
