No theory can explain yet exactly how gravity works. All theories do however predict gravity to move at the speed of light. That means if the sun just went away, we wouldn't know for a little over 8 minutes.

You should absolutely watch or order the DVD for this show from PBS called "The Elegant Universe". It answers the exact question you have with amazing graphics and easy to understand language.

They say if the sun disappeared in an instant, it would take about 5 minutes, which is the speed of light from the sun to the earth, for the earth to drift into outer space. It has to do with the curvature of space-time.

Well, if Mr. Sun gets lost then Mother Earth will wander aimlessly throughout space looking for another Mr. Sun to have as her center of attention.

Probably 8 minutes, i think this because that's how long it takes for the light from the sun to get to the planet earth.

gravity is an effect caused by matter distorting time.

time travels at C, and so it would take about 8 minutes for the change in local gravity to take place on earth.

since we are so close to earth, its gravitational effects are much greater, and unless we were studying instruments that measure gravity we would not notice it.

9.8 meters/ second squared

32 feet per second squared

I think Galileo figured it out by rolling some marbles

or maybe Newton with the apple

anyway, no need to worry cuz we are in orbit (like a falling toward and falling away at the same time)around the sun

anyway, if it did float away, we would get very very cold

if the sun gets "lost" then we are going to die for the lack of heat in a matter of seconds, we will not notice nothing because we will be dead
