I wnat to get a laptop, but I'm on a budget. I can't afford a Gateway, and I hate Macs. Do the laptops you buy for a grand at Wal-Mart perform as well? I've used them a couple of times and have been pretty impressed, but I haven't used them long enough to really make a judgemtent. My main concerns are gaming, surfing the web, music and video, and burning cd's. I don't care about burning DVD's, but I would like to watch them. I will be going to college in about three years, and until then I can use the computers at my high scyhool. Then i'm going to need one that I can use for school, but I can probably buy a new one for that. Any help?

Why do you hate Macs? If you're going to spend a grand, you won't find a better notebook than a Mac. Why bother with a PC notebook when Macs can run both Mac OS X and Windows?

E-Machines are Low End Gateways.
Buy a Cheap Machine, but Make Sure you get a good Warranty; Basically, the rule of Pay Peanuts get Monkeys still applies.
Check out Compusa for somew variants.
Online is Risky, but some places like Upgrade Solutions can offer you some good alternatives

well for SERIOUS gaming you will need more than a 1000 but for average gaming you should be fine, there are a lot of decent laptops you can get for a 1000, you ought to look at dell and some of the other big PC makers as you can usually go to their web site and configure a laptop to your specs/price range (that way instead of buying a"canned" system you buy one that does what you want at your price range)

I think places like circuit city and best buy have bleh computers, actually. You can go there to do some research and learn about them, but you can get better deals online. Plus the computers they sell tend to be not as good. Like Hewlett-Packards I have heard are not great.

I've found some pretty good deals online.

My two favorite places are Tigerdirect and NewEgg. There's also PriceWatch, but I haven't had the opportunity to use their services yet.

Google / Yahoo search for: laptop reviews

When you find one that suits your needs, shop for best price. It doesn't really matter where you buy it; the PC manufacturer guarantee is what counts.
