How would you feel if your child's teacher was indoctrinating students with his/her political ideology? I think it is OK for a teacher to present information objectively, but this teacher is continually expressing her political views and putting down that which is contrary. This teacher now wants to show the students a movie which is very politically charged--without presenting the other side. How would you deal with this situation?

I would have a serious talk with that teacher, and if that did not work I would start working up the chain.

I would not agree with any public high school teacher indoctrinating students with any political ideology.

Indoctrinating is vastly different from expressing personal opinion and encouraging discussion.

If I were a parent to a child or young adult in this situation I would be at the school in the principals office, after speaking to the teacher in person in about 2 heartbeats.

The correct way to approach all topics which are highly charged and highly individual such as religion and politics; is to offer all the different views for discussion and then let the people who have learned all the information decide for themselves.

There should be no one-side presentation one way or the other. Even if this teacher was presenting all of the ideas that I believe, I would not agree with that being presented to my child in a classroom setting.

If this is actually happening to your child, I would expect that you are not going to be the only parent protesting this approach. I can see the school board getting involved in this and the teacher being put on probation or fired in my part of the country.

Have a good day.

I had a teacher in high school that was very vocal political. His passion for politics helped the students learn, even if if was "a little"one sided.
Our other high school history teachers were football coaches teaching only so they could hold coaching positions. I think it is great to see a teacher actually wanting students to learn/ get involved in government.
If your views differ, incourage your children to challenge the teachers position.

I'd talk to her first and if you don't get any resolution to the problem, I'd talk with the principal and then the school board .

This sounds just like the school system that forced parents to watch 'The Inconvenient Truth/Lie ' or otherwise their kid's grades would be affected . But maybe you could elaborate a little on the subject to make it clear as to what you find objectionable !!

I imagine it's nearly impossible for teachers to be completely unbiased - but to put down people that think differently, that's wrong. Teachers are supposed to support growth and learning - and you can't do that if you're narrow-minded. Talk to the teacher - if that doesn't help, talk to the principal. Encourage other parents to do the same. It's possible more parents have the same issue but just haven't said anything.

This is not appropriate. The school room is a place of open discussion, and should not be there for discussion of censored politics. It would be ok if the teacher allowed the students to voice their opinions in conjunction with her own, but if she refuses to hear the argurments and insists on only allowing her opinion to be heard or those who agree with her than she is violating her student's rights. I would talk to the principal.

No they should not. Whether they are liberal or Conservative. Public school teacher should not express their religious opinions to students either. They should just teach the subject they are paid to teach.

The bias is there whether they admit it or not.

I'd rather they admit their biases than pretend to be presenting objective history.

I'd rather they admit they're 1960s liberals than pretend that they're just objective history teachers and try to convince my kid that JFK was going to pull out of 'Nam, in which case I'd have to explain to my kid that the only basis for that fantasy is that JFK ended1000 troops' deployment 6 weeks early so they'd be home in time for Christmas.

They're about to teach my kid that the "right of the people to keep and bear arms" means the right of the states to have National Guard units, the only basis for which is the reference to a militia, which isn't and never was the National Guard. They're free to like or dislike the 2nd Amendment but there's no basis for the fiction they're about to teach. If they admit that they're very biased then at least they won't confuse my kid.

Depends on exactly what is going on. I would take it to the administrators at the school, explain your position and that you dont object to the teacher showing the movie as long as a counter point movie is shown as well. Religion and Politics should not be taught in school.

No, They were hired to teach. The Teacher's Union should be dissolved and they should be held accountable for their work. Man, I could go on and on but to keep it short, private school is more efficient and show better results in teaching.
